Tension is escalating in Ibadan, Oyo State, following the state government’s move to install Sharafadeen Alli, a gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as a beaded crown-wearing Oba in Ibadanland.

The media gathered that the decision to install Alli, who currently represents Oyo South Senatorial District at the National Assembly, was made public on Thursday.

The development was announced through a letter signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo.

Ojo in the letter dated 26 March, 2026 and addressed to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, said the coronation is long overdue.

High Chief Alli, High Chief Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin, and High Chief Kola Babalola have been listed among those to be installed as Obas.

Ojo stated that the coronation ceremony is scheduled for April 3, 2026, and will take place at Mapo Hall.

However, The media gathered that the announcement has sparked tension in parts of Ibadan, particularly among political stakeholders, where the development has become a major topic of discussion.

Analysts and various groups have expressed differing views on the planned coronation, with some describing it as a positive step, while others perceive it as a possible political move.

While certain observers believe the development could hinder Alli’s gubernatorial ambition, others argue that it will have no adverse effect on his political aspirations.

An Ibadan indigene, who spoke anonymously, maintained that existing laws do not prevent Alli from contesting for the governorship, even if he is installed as a beaded crown-wearing Oba.

“It is purely a legal matter. There is nothing in the law stopping him from aspiring to be governor. He can also choose to decline the beaded crown. Even the current Olubadan initially rejected the crown and only accepted it when he was ready to ascend the throne,” the source said.
