Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have foiled a planned mass abduction by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in Borno State, rescuing over 150 civilians during a coordinated military response.
The incident occurred at about 2:50 p.m. on March 30, 2026, when troops under Sector 2, deployed at Dutse Kura, came under attack while escorting civilians along the Buratai–Kamuya axis.
According to a statement by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (North East), Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, surveillance assets revealed that the insurgents were attempting to abduct a large number of civilians, including men, women and children, using about 17 vehicles.
In response, troops engaged the terrorists and called in reinforcements from the Quick Response Force, which helped repel the attack and launched a pursuit towards the Mangari area.
The terrorists were forced to abandon the abducted civilians and vehicles as they fled under pressure from the advancing troops.
“All rescued civilians, estimated at over 150, were safely recovered and moved to Buratai for onward movement to reunite with their families,” the statement said.
However, during the pursuit, troops encountered an improvised explosive device along the Bula Zarma–Mangari axis, leaving five personnel with severe injuries. The wounded soldiers were immediately evacuated for specialist medical care.
The military said the operation demonstrated the troops’ vigilance, rapid response capability and commitment to protecting civilians, particularly as the Easter period approaches.
It added that the development underscores the resolve of Operation HADIN KAI to deny terrorists freedom of action and sustain pressure on insurgents across the North East.
