The Osun State Government has warned the Nigerian Police against receiving vehicles from local government chairmen elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the government, the individuals currently overseeing the councils do not have a legitimate mandate to occupy their positions.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday in Osogbo by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi.

Alimi described the planned donation of security vehicles as a “poisoned gift,” alleging it carries ulterior motives that could be harmful.

He urged the police to decline the offer to protect the integrity and credibility of the force.

The warning comes after the APC announced that its council chairmen would provide operational vehicles to support security agencies and improve policing.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, the party criticised Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration, insisting that safeguarding lives and property should come before politics.

The APC argued that offering logistical support to security agencies should not be politicised, stressing that such contributions are vital in tackling crime.

However, the state government dismissed the argument, accusing the party of turning security issues into political tools.

It maintained that the APC-backed council officials lack legal standing and should not be recognised as legitimate authorities supporting law enforcement.

The government also noted that the status of the chairmen is still being contested in court, with rulings expected on May 12 and May 21, 2026.

It therefore called on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Ridwan Disu, to step in and instruct officers in the state to reject the vehicles until the legal matters are resolved.
