The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to inclusive education as the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) continues to expand its intervention across schools in the
state.
Speaking at the presentation of items to selected inclusive schools held on Thursday, at the 2026 edition of COWLSO’s schools intervention initiative held in her office, the First Lady disclosed that COWLSO has invested over ₦234 million in 48 schools between 2022 and 2026.
She explained that the initiative, executed through the COWLSO Schools Committee, focuses on identifying critical gaps within the education sector and complementing government efforts, particularly in supporting children with special needs.
According to her, the maiden edition of the programme in 2022/2023 impacted 12 schools with ₦49.8 million, while the second phase in 2023/2024 supported another 12 schools with ₦60 million.
“In this third phase, Project 3.0, we have scaled up our impact by supporting 24 schools with interventions valued at ₦124.457 million, bringing the total investment to ₦234.257 million across the three phases,” she said.
The First Lady noted that the 2026 beneficiary schools were drawn from the six Education Districts in Lagos State, comprising 12 primary and 12 secondary inclusive schools.
She highlighted that the interventions include renovation of classroom blocks, provision of potable water, perimeter fencing, beds for boarding facilities, science laboratory equipment, ICT centres, and other essential learning materials tailored for children with special needs.
Dr. Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the intervention underscores COWLSO’s commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind, noting that inclusive education remains central to the State’s development agenda and aligns with the THEMES Plus Agenda of the administration of her husband, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.
She stressed the importance of sustainability, urging school administrators to maintain the facilities and ensure that the interventions continue to benefit students for years to come.
Earlier in her remarks, the Coordinator of the COWLSO Schools Committee, Mrs. Anike Adekanye, described the intervention as a “mission of the heart,” reflecting years of dedicated efforts to improve learning environments across Lagos State.
Mrs. Adekanye, a retired Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, explained that since the inception of the Schools Intervention Programme, COWLSO has implemented three phases of projects, delivering critical infrastructure and facilities to schools across the state.
Highlighting the significance of the current phase, she disclosed that Project 3.0 specifically focused on inclusive schools, including schools for children with visual and hearing impairments, as well as other special needs.
According to her, the initiative was inspired by firsthand experiences and a deep desire to improve the learning conditions of vulnerable students across the state.
Mrs. Adekanye also emphasised that all funds allocated to the projects were judiciously utilised, with ongoing monitoring and evaluation to ensure that the facilities provided are effectively used and properly maintained.
She commended the First Lady for her visionary leadership and unwavering support, noting that the success of the programme is a testament to strong collaboration and shared commitment within COWLSO.
