FLASH FLOODS AND LANDSLIDES CLAIM SEVEN LIVES IN VIETNAM
Seven people have died in northern Vietnam as a result of flash floods and landslides brought on by intense rain, according to disaster officials and state media on Thursday.
After the rains, two people died in Dien Bien and five people perished in Son La.
According to officials, rescuers are also looking for ten more people who have been reported missing in the mountains.
The Tuoi Tre newspaper reports that early on Thursday, flash floods in Dien Bien province’s Muong Pon commune destroyed ten houses and severely damaged eight others.
Since Tuesday, there has been a lot of rain in northern Vietnam; as a result, murky floodwater has covered several locations, including the suburbs of the capital Hanoi.
Rainfall frequently occurs in Vietnam between June and November, causing landslides and flooding.
On the other hand, climate change is causing extreme weather events to occur more frequently and with greater intensity worldwide, according to scientists.
Persistent rain caused a landslide in the northern province of Ha Giang in mid-July, murdering eleven people in a van.
The Southeast Asian nation saw 169 fatalities and missing persons as a result of natural disasters last year.
