The Ministry for Wealth Creation and Employment launched one of its flagship initiatives of the Lagos State Government themed “GRADUATE INTERNSHIP PLACEMENT PROGRAMME (GIPP) designed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to address pressing challenges of unemployment, underemployment, and economic inequality within the state.
The Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Hon. Akinyemi Bankole Ajigbotafe disclosed this on Wednesday, during a press conference held at Alausa Secretariat.
Bankole stated that the Graduate Internship Placement Programme (GIPP) is specifically targeted at post-NYSC graduates in Lagos State, adding that it is one of the strategies being used by the State Government to address unemployment among the youth, especially University graduates.
“With Lagos State’s population exceeding 27 million and projected to reach 35.8 million by 2030, the need for robust employment strategies has never been more urgent”, he said.
However, the Empower Lagos Initiative aims to create sustainable wealth for a minimum of 10,000 beneficiaries across all industries, with adequate measures put in place to ensure each beneficiary trains at least 10 individuals resulting in a multiplier effect of more than 100,000 Lagos State residents over a period of 36 months, thereby, addressing skill gaps and ensuring economic growth.
“We are providing employability training to a minimum of 2,000 first-degree holders. Additionally, some beneficiaries undergo specialized ICT training with certification upon completion, we also intended to train and give equipment grants for 5,000 artisans and tradesmen”.
Bankole went further, “0-3 Years Work Experience, LASSRA Registration, Post NYSC Certificate, Pass a basic aptitude and personality test that will be administered through a Computer Based Test, are the eligible criteria put in place to get the best”.
“For this purpose, the Portal for wealthcreation.lagosstateGIPP2024 was opened on Monday, 1st July, 2024 and was supposed to have closed on Friday, 19th July, 2024 but was extended to Friday, 2nd August, 2024 to allow more youths to register.
He therefore advised the Lagos State youths to give the rigorous training a try and ensure that they partake in the training as they don’t know how much benefit it will be to them, he further assured them after going through the training they will surely thank the Governor of Lagos State.
