UNIBEN VC EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER LOW STUDENT ENROLLMENT IN NELFUND LOAN PROGRAM
Prof. Edoba Omoregie, the vice chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), has expressed disapproval of the low number of students enrolled in the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) program.
In an Abuja meeting with representatives of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, or NELFUND, Prof. Omoregie brought up the issues.
The Vice Chancellor was in the NELFUND office to discuss the possibility of enrolling more Uniben students in the program, according to a statement from the school’s Public Relations Office that was provided to reporters in Benin City.
In response to the request, Mustapha Iyal, Executive Director, Operations at NELFUND, stated that the main causes of the low enrollment were a lack of awareness and skepticism over the fund’s legitimacy.
Iyal, who greeted the Vice Chancellor along with other authorities, stated that the plan is ready to incorporate as many university students as possible—but only if they apply and follow the rules.
Yet, he commended the Vice-Chancellor for his merited appointment.
As of August 16, 2024, 332 university students had benefited from the program. N24.4 million was given to the kids who benefited from the program.
Additionally, it stated that as of November 23, 2024, 105,764 beneficiaries from 98 federal and state postsecondary institutions have received N11,047,793,949.80 billion from the NELFUND.
