UPDATE: SOWORE GRANTED BAIL, REJECTS ‘UNREASONABLE CONDITIONS’
Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate and activist, revealed that he was released on bail after meeting with the Nigeria Police Force’s Force Intelligence Department in Abuja on Monday.
But according to Sowore, he would reject any bail requirements that jeopardise his “innocence, dignity, and integrity.”
The activist was called to face a number of charges, according to a previous report, including refusing and obstructing public officials, disobeying legal orders, cyberstalking, and actions purportedly meant to thwart arrests.
However, he said in a statement posted on X.com on Monday that he is being singled out because he publicly criticised Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun’s decision to extend his term.
He also alleged that the plan of the police “is to detain me and take me to Lagos for a kangaroo trial.”
In a subsequent post, Sowore stated that the Deputy Inspector-General of the FID, Dasuki Galandachi, informed him of the bail offer pending the conclusion of an “investigation.”
He wrote, “The DIG of FID, Dasuki Galandachi, at the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja had just informed me that he has instructed his personnel to grant me bail, pending the conclusion of the “investigation”.
“I have also advised the DIG that in accepting “bail”, I will not agree to conditions that compromise my innocence, dignity, and integrity.
“If such unreasonable conditions are imposed, I will choose to remain in detention until I am charged to court, even then I know that there is no crime defined or to be investigated it is just the impunity that has become the hallmark of the PoliceNG hierarchy.”
