IBADAN FUNFAIR TRAGEDY: OYO CAUTIONS AGAINST UNREGULATED VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

Read Time:1 Minute, 4 Second

On Tuesday, the Oyo State Government issued a strong warning to corporate organizations, event planners, and individuals organizing large-scale celebrations for St. Valentine’s Day, urging them to comply with the state’s rules and regulations.

A statement from the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, in Ibadan, the state capital, highlighted that many broadcast stations had been airing advertisements promoting Valentine’s Day events at various venues.

Oyelade emphasized that security personnel must be involved in any event planned for that day.

He added, “All parties involved in organizing such events must ensure the active participation of security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun, Operation Burst, and other security forces, to ensure proper logistics for smooth and safe gatherings.”

“There must be a consensus between the planners, security and medical personnel on the choices of the venues,”he said .

He said the state Ministry of Health and the Hospitals Management Board must be involved, along with private hospitals where necessary, to ensure adequate medical support.

The commissioner “warned that anyone who flouts this directive will face the full wrath of the law.”

He, however, reminded the public that the state is still grieving the tragic loss of 35 children at an event in Ibadan on December 18.
