UPDATE: KENYA’S EDWIN KIBET EMERGES CHAMPION OF 2025 LAGOS CITY MARATHON
Kenyan runner Edwin Koech emerged as the champion of the men’s division in the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, held on Saturday.
Koech secured the top spot, earning a $50,000 prize—his second victory after winning the 2023 edition.
He completed the race in a record time of 2 hours and 14 minutes.
Approximately 37,000 participants took part in the marathon, competing in both the 10km and 42km races.
Speaking at the event, the General Manager of the race and retired Nigerian long jumper, Yusuf Ali, noted that “the figure was derived from the number of running kits distributed out of the over 60,000 runners who registered to take part.”
The 42km race kicked off at 6:30 a.m. from the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, while the 10km marathon began at 9:30 a.m. from the Grace Garden Event Centre in Lekki. Both races concluded at Eko Atlantic City.
First held in 2016, the marathon marked its 10th edition this year, boasting a World Athletics gold label. The organizers aim to achieve a platinum label, which would make it the first marathon in Africa to attain that status.
Ahead of the event, the Lagos State Government announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion along designated routes from 5 a.m. to 1p.m. on Friday.
