OSHIOMHOLE DEMANDS SEVERE PUNISHMENT FOR NAFDAC OVER CHEMICAL RIPENING OF FRUITS
By: Motunrayo Aniwura
Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who represents the Edo North Senatorial District, has sharply criticized the National Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), accusing the agency of neglecting the widespread use of harmful chemicals for ripening fruits in the country.
He made the statement during a debate on a motion, “Urgent need to investigate with an intention to halt the continuous unwholesome practices of chemical ripening of fruits among fruit sellers in Nigeria”, on Wednesday in Abuja.
Oshiomhole blamed NAFDAC for their carefree attitude despite the obvious use of toxic chemicals as preservative measures, which have been proven over time as responsible for cancer and other ailments that have killed several people.
He wondered how Senators could discover the unwholesome practices of chemical ripening of fruits among fruit sellers, yet NAFDAC, an “agency saddled with the responsibility of chemical and food standards” could not discover this.
He questioned how the agency was using government funds allocated to them if they were not fulfilling their responsibilities, allowing people to consume contaminated and toxic food.
He proposed that NAFDAC should be held accountable and face consequences for their negligence.
Oshiomhole said: “Mr President, Distinguished Colleagues, NAFDAC should be punished for its indifference and carelessness for allowing the use of chemicals to preserve fruits”.
