Twelve individuals have been convicted for violating environmental laws in Kwara State, following their arrest at the Ilorin Central Market (Oja-Oba) for various offences, including road encroachment and illegal display of goods on pedestrian walkways.

The convictions were handed down by a mobile court constituted by the Kwara State Government, which began sitting at the market on Monday. The court was set up to enforce the state’s environmental regulations more effectively.

According to a statement by the Press Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Muritala Shakirat, the offenders were charged after repeated warnings and public sensitisation campaigns by the government failed to yield compliance.

Presiding Magistrate Muhammad Aluko sentenced the violators in accordance with provisions of the Kwara State Environmental Laws. As first-time offenders, they were given the option of paying fines, which they fulfilled through the State Internal Revenue Service personnel present at the court session.

The mobile court comprises a Chief Magistrate, Environmental Health Officers, and security operatives, working in a coordinated effort to curb environmental abuses in the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Buge, sent a monitoring team led by Permanent Secretary Dr. Abubakar Ayinla to observe proceedings and deliver her message.

In her goodwill message, the commissioner commended the synergy between security agencies and other stakeholders in tackling challenges such as road encroachment, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, and poor waste management.

She urged continued public cooperation to maintain a cleaner and healthier Kwara under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

“As a state, we must continue to say ‘no’ to indiscriminate dumping of wastes, road encroachment, and other practices that are inimical to the environment,” she stressed.
