The people of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Delta State erupted in celebration on Tuesday following the Supreme Court’s final ruling affirming the legitimacy of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family as the rightful occupants of the Ogwashi-Uku throne.
In a unanimous judgment delivered on June 24, 2025, in Abuja, the apex court dismissed the latest appeal filed by Chief Francis Njokanma, Felix Izediunor, Wilson Izediunor, and others representing the UmuDieyi Family. The case, Suit No. SC/CV/1036/2022, sought to challenge the earlier ruling in favour of Prince Thomas Mowete and other representatives of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family.
This marks the final legal nail in a chieftaincy dispute that has spanned over four decades between the two prominent families, with the throne currently occupied by Obi Ifechukwude Okonjo.
Following the judgment, there was widespread jubilation in Ogwashi-Uku, as youths and elders took to the streets in thanksgiving, celebrating the end of the protracted legal battle that has threatened the peace and cohesion of the kingdom.
Speaking on behalf of the victorious royal family, Prince Onyema Okonjo praised the Supreme Court for delivering what he described as long-overdue justice.
“This judgment confirms what the law has long made clear. There is no further appeal pending,” he said. “We call on the UmuDieyi Family to respect the court’s decision and desist from further actions that undermine the unity and peace of Ogwashi-Uku.”
He also issued a stern warning against continued provocation or disobedience of the ruling, stating that any further attempts to trespass on royal property or disrupt traditional authority would not be tolerated.
Observers say the Supreme Court ruling brings full and final closure to the longstanding legal tussle, and any future attempt to revisit the case could be regarded as an abuse of court process.
The judgment is expected to consolidate traditional structures and promote stability in the kingdom, where chieftaincy disputes have historically caused deep divisions.
With the apex court’s final word, the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom now looks ahead to a new chapter of peace, unity, and traditional progress under the leadership of Obi Ifechukwude Okonjo.
