The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has expressed alarm over the rising incidents of unruly passenger behaviour at the country’s airports, warning that such conduct will no longer be tolerated and will attract severe sanctions under existing aviation laws.

In a statement issued on Monday by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, FAAN described the behaviour as “entirely unacceptable within the framework of civil aviation” and stressed that it would henceforth enforce penalties in line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annexe 17, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Part 17), and FAAN Bye Laws.

The authority advised travellers to familiarise themselves with the Passengers’ Rights and Responsibilities as well as the Airlines’ Obligations published by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority and FAAN Bye Laws.

“Moving forward, the Authority will not hesitate to implement relevant sanctions against any form of disruptive or threatening behaviour within airport premises,” the statement read.

FAAN also disclosed that it is reviewing its security protocols, including measures for restraining and prosecuting disruptive passengers, in line with the Airport Approved Security Programme and applicable laws.

On a recent incident involving a passenger aboard an Ibom Air flight, FAAN explained that while security personnel at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Domestic Terminal 2 initially managed the situation, its Aviation Security team later intervened, took the individual into custody, and handed her over to the Nigerian Police Force for investigation and prosecution.

Reiterating its zero-tolerance stance, FAAN urged passengers to maintain civility and comply with all regulations, assuring that the safety, security, and comfort of airport users remain its top priority.
