The Lagos State Government has intensified its enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics, confiscating prohibited items from several supermarkets across the state.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a video shared on his official X handle on Wednesday. The footage showed enforcement officers seizing plastic cups, straws, and other single-use plastic products from retail outlets.

“Our enforcement team today visited Blenco Supermarket in Lekki to enforce the ban on single-use plastics,” Wahab said, adding that the action formed part of the government’s broader efforts to curb environmental pollution and flooding.

According to him, the operation also extended to Blend and Temple Hill Supermarkets in Ire-Akari, Jendol Supermarket in Jakande Estate, Ejigbo, as well as Lastprize and Reno Supermarkets along Liasu Road, Idimu.

Wahab stressed that the government would continue monitoring and engaging businesses to adopt sustainable alternatives. “This action is part of our wider efforts to ensure compliance with the state’s directive on phasing out SUP, which poses serious environmental risks and worsens flooding across Lagos,” he said.

The enforcement drive, which began on July 1, followed an 18-month moratorium that gave businesses time to phase out single-use plastics. The ban covers disposable plastic bags, including the commonly used black nylon bags, in line with the state’s environmental protection laws.

Officials reiterated that the crackdown would continue across markets and retail outlets until full compliance is achieved.
