Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old woman, Maryam Atiku, for allegedly attempting to kill her newborn baby girl by burying her alive in Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, revealing that it occurred on June 25, 2025.

According to the statement, Maryam allegedly tied the baby’s neck with wrappers, covered her mouth, and buried her in a shallow grave at Malam Yaro bush.

The following day, a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, noticed disturbed soil resembling a fresh grave while working on his farm. He raised the alarm, and with the help of residents, exhumed the baby who was found alive.

The infant was rushed to General Hospital, Kamba, where doctors confirmed her condition as stable after receiving treatment.

Police detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department later arrested Maryam, who reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.

Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Sani, condemned the act as “inhuman and unacceptable,” stressing the Command’s zero tolerance for child abuse, exploitation, and gender-based violence.

He urged parents and guardians not to compromise the future of children due to poverty or other pressures, while commending Governor’s wife, Hajiya Zainab Nasir Idris, for supporting the welfare of the rescued baby. He also praised Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad for his timely intervention.

The suspect will be arraigned in court to face prosecution, which the police said would serve as a deterrent to others.
