An Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 28-year-old auto mechanic, Akeem Jimoh, to three years in prison for stealing 17 tubers of yam valued at N35,000.
Jimoh was arraigned on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of theft pressed against him by the police.
According to the charge sheet, the convict stole the yams on July 25, 2025, around 10 pm behind Africa Primary School, Ataoja Area, Osogbo.
During interrogation, Jimoh admitted to the crime, saying he acted out of hunger and pleaded for leniency. The police prosecutor, Babatunde Olukokun, also informed the court that Jimoh had previously served a three-year jail term after standing as surety for a suspect who later jumped bail.
In her ruling, Magistrate Muibah Olatunji sentenced Jimoh to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour, without the option of a fine.
The conviction adds to recent cases of petty theft leading to jail terms, including the sentencing of a 21-year-old man in Ogun for stealing a fowl and another man in Osun for stealing a generator.
