The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has acknowledged that he is contemplating a future beyond the role of speaker, indicating that he does not dismiss the possibility of seeking gubernatorial office.

Obasa, who recently navigated a political upheaval that momentarily resulted in his removal from his role, made this declaration during an interview with Television Continental on Thursday.

In a prior discussion with the television network, Obasa expressed that the subsequent phase of his political career could involve serving as a senator or governor, following his experiences as a councilor and speaker.

When reminded of his earlier statement, Obasa clarified that the assertion he made seven years prior was not definitive.

He emphasized that his ambitions and decisions regarding his political trajectory ultimately reside with his political party.

“Allow me to clarify. As we discuss politics, one must be a member of a political party, and as a member, one must have faith in the party’s leadership,” Obasa remarked.

He elaborated that while every politician may have aspirations, advancement in politics is contingent upon the structures and leaders of the party.

“Consequently, there comes a point where you cannot independently decide what is next for you. You might personally aspire to achieve a certain position, but if you have respect for the party and its management, you recognize that the party leaders will convene to determine who will succeed next. It is fundamentally about consultation and engagement with the party leadership,” he added.

The Speaker, however, did not reject the notion of possessing gubernatorial ambitions. When questioned about the possibility of extending his tenure in the Lagos Assembly for an additional four-year term, Obasa replied, “not really. ”
