PDP IN ‘DEEP CONSULTATIONS’ TO FIND UNIFYING CANDIDATE

The Peoples Democratic Party has revealed that numerous politicians are discreetly positioning themselves for the party’s 2027 presidential nomination, beyond the prominent individuals currently commanding public attention.
During a statement on Sunday in Abuja, the party’s Deputy National Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha, informed reporters that discussions and deliberations are underway within the PDP to ascertain who will ultimately represent its presidential banner in 2027.
Thus far, public focus has highlighted potential candidates such as former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Labour Party presidential nominee Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
The party asserts that these individuals comprise merely a segment of a larger pool of aspirants maneuvering behind the scenes.
“Those names you mentioned remain speculative at this stage. What is important now in the PDP are negotiations and discussions. The party is engaging in deep consultations to identify the most credible candidate who can unify the country and command nationwide support,” Osuoha explained.
He emphasized that while public discourse has revolved around Jonathan, Obi, and Makinde, other prominent politicians from the southern region have initiated outreach to party stakeholders through confidential meetings.
According to him, these aspirants are strategically cultivating momentum, anticipating the opportune moment to officially declare their intentions.
Osuoha further highlighted that the PDP’s immediate focus is not the presidential nomination but the successful execution of its upcoming national convention.

During the convention, new national officers will be elected to lead the party for the next four years and set the groundwork for the 2027 elections.
“It is after the convention that the party will formally narrow the field to those who want to contest.
‘’The PDP is determined to conduct a free, fair, and transparent primary election. We want to show Nigerians that when we talk about democracy, we practice it,” he added.
This recent position follows Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro’s recent identification of Jonathan, Obi, and Makinde among the potential presidential aspirants under consideration.
The Benue South senator, however, also acknowledged that other viable candidates from the South could enter the race as internal consultations intensify within the party.
With fewer than two years remaining before party primaries commence, political analysts contend that the PDP’s strategy will likely concentrate on identifying a unifying candidate capable of bridging internal divides and effectively challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
