The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State is experiencing an escalating internal conflict due to contradictory directives regarding the state congress intended to select a new State Working Committee (SWC).

On Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, in an unsigned press statement, declared the postponement of the congress, which was previously slated for Saturday, September 27, 2025.

Additionally, it is important to reference an earlier announcement by the National Publicity Secretary that instructed the South South Zonal Caretaker Committee, led by Emmanuel Ogidi, to take charge of the state chapter’s operations until new elections can be conducted, citing the conclusion of the current executive’s term.

The state congress will be conducted by the state chapter, with the national committee’s function being one of oversight rather than governance,” he stated.

In response to assertions regarding the expiration of his term, Ikem presented documentation to substantiate his claims. “Our election took place on September 18, 2021, and we were inaugurated on September 29. I have submitted my oath of office and allegiance. Let anyone asserting otherwise provide their evidence,” he affirmed.

The ongoing dispute has resulted in significant divisions within the PDP in Cross River, heightening concerns about cohesion in anticipation of pivotal political contests in the state.
