The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday unveiled the installation of integrated solar-powered streetlights in Abuja under the “Light Up Abuja” project, aimed at improving security and enhancing the city’s infrastructure.

The project follows Memorandums of Understanding signed in September 2024 with Chinese firms, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC), during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Beijing for the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit.

Speaking at the flag-off, Wike noted that 80 per cent of the FCT was in darkness when he assumed office in August 2023, a situation worsened by vandalism and cable theft. He said the new solar streetlights will not only provide reliable lighting but also come with surveillance features to deter sabotage.

“If we continue to leave Abuja in darkness, obviously, insecurity will increase. That is why we decided to act. These new streetlights are fitted with surveillance features to track attempts at vandalism or theft,” Wike said.

He disclosed that under the terms of the agreement, CCECC and CGC will maintain and secure the streetlights for the next four to five years, eliminating the burden of recurrent maintenance costs on government.

The minister, who described the project as part of preparations for the FCT’s 50th anniversary in February 2026, said his administration would not be distracted by opposition from those benefiting from the old system of repeated repairs.
