A viral video has surfaced on social media showing armed policemen allegedly assaulting a driver, confiscating his phone, and driving away with his car in the Surulere area of Lagos State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, October 1, during Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations.

The video, shared on X.com by a user identified as #ChuksEricE, captured the moment several officers stepped out of a burgundy car, dragged the victim from his vehicle, and forcibly removed his phone from his pocket before pushing him into their car. Moments later, one of the officers was seen driving off in the victim’s vehicle.

Reacting to the footage on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, tagged the Lagos Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU) in a post on X. In its response, the CRU wrote, “This is noted for action ma,” suggesting that an investigation has been opened into the matter.

The incident has sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and swift action against the officers involved.

This latest controversy comes barely two months after the Lagos Police Command dissolved one of its tactical squads over a similar incident. In August, a video showed officers assaulting a motorist during a stop-and-search, after attempting to remove his glasses, which they suspected contained a hidden camera.
