The Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization Think Yoruba First (TYF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to pursue a middle ground for effective cooperation with the United States.

The group urged the President to distinguish his leadership from that of his predecessors by addressing root problems rather than merely treating the symptoms.

This appeal comes amid growing security concerns in Nigeria and international reactions to the country’s internal challenges.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Think Yoruba First (TYF) Public Relations Officer Ogbeni Oluwole Lewis referenced a recent comment by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened military intervention in Nigeria over what he described as an “alleged genocide against Christians, particularly in Northern Nigeria,” accusing the Nigerian government of failing to respond decisively.

The group highlighted that foreign actors have long been blamed for contributing to instability in Nigeria and the wider Sahel region, stressing the need for the Nigerian government to reassess both its internal and external security strategies.

“We must encourage the President and his cabinet to take a holistic view of the multiple threats confronting Nigeria today,” Lewis said.

He further argued that Nigeria’s centralized security system is no longer sustainable, emphasizing the urgent need for decentralization.

“Decentralizing the security apparatus is essential to address issues relating to manpower, response time, and intelligence gathering. Sub-national entities must be empowered to defend themselves without relying solely on federal forces. A rigidly centralized system also increases the risk of coups, as history has shown,” Lewis added.

He also called on President Tinubu to collaborate closely with U.S. security agencies, particularly in areas such as intelligence sharing and the acquisition of advanced security equipment.

“There is no cost too great to protect the lives of our citizens. We must put aside ego and seek all the help available. Finding a middle ground for effective collaboration is essential,” he said.
