Iran on Monday condemned Israel following the killing of Hezbollah’s military chief, who was targeted in a strike in Beirut, Lebanon, the previous day.

“The Iranian Foreign Ministry strongly denounces the cowardly assassination of the esteemed commander of the Lebanese Islamic Resistance, the martyr Haytham Ali Tabatabai,” the ministry stated.

Tabatabai is the highest-ranking Hezbollah commander killed by Israel since the ceasefire in November 2024, which aimed to end over a year of hostilities.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry described his killing as “a blatant violation of the November 2024 ceasefire and a severe breach of Lebanon’s national sovereignty.”

Hezbollah confirmed the death of “the great commander” Tabatabai. Largely unknown to the Lebanese public, he was among the new leaders appointed to guide the group following the war.

Since the truce, Israel has repeatedly carried out airstrikes in Lebanon, claiming to target Hezbollah personnel and infrastructure.

Iran, a key backer of Hezbollah, has seen the group significantly weakened due to its recent clashes with Israel and the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, which severed a critical overland route to Iran.

The developments also represent a setback for Iran itself, which endured Israeli and US strikes on its nuclear facilities during a 12-day conflict with Israel earlier this year.
