POLICE FOIL HERDSMEN ATTACK IN BENUE, RESCUE ABDUCTED WOMAN

The Benue State Police Command has successfully repelled an attack by suspected armed herders in Awanse community, Kwande Local Government Area, rescuing an abducted woman unharmed.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, the incident occurred on February 6, 2026, around 12:40 p.m., when police operatives on confidence-building patrol across Kwande LGA received a distress report that armed herders had invaded the community, firing sporadically.
The statement said the attackers had abducted a woman along the road during the raid. Police teams promptly mobilized, engaged the assailants in a gunfight, and successfully repelled the attack, forcing the suspects to flee.
DSP Edet confirmed that the woman was rescued unharmed and that no lives were lost during the incident. He added that the area has since been secured, with additional tactical personnel deployed to reinforce security and prevent further attacks.
The police also provided an update on a previous attack in Abende community on February 3, 2026. During continued search and combing operations, five more bodies were recovered, bringing the total number of fatalities from the Abende attack to 10.
The command stated that the security situation in the affected communities is currently calm, as intensive patrols, surveillance, and monitoring continue.
Reacting to the development, Benue State Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property. He emphasized that all necessary operational measures are being maintained to prevent further attacks and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
