OYO ROYALS SEEK COURT INJUNCTION AGAINST ALAAFIN’S PUBLIC DUTIES

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has been summoned to appear in court—either personally or through legal representation—following a case filed against him by the town’s princes at the State High Court in Oyo Town.
The plaintiffs—Ladigbolu Adegboyega, Owoade Tesleem, Adeyemi Adesina, and Adeyemi Adebayo—filed Suit No: HOY/18/2026, seeking a perpetual injunction to prevent the Alaafin, whether directly or through aides, from attending events deemed inappropriate for the symbolic leader of the Yoruba people.

They also requested an order restraining the Alaafin from acting in any traditional or official capacity that could place him beneath or subordinate to other Obas in Yorubaland.
The suit further calls for a declaration recognizing the Alaafin’s office as historically significant, not only within Yorubaland but across Nigeria, West Africa, and beyond.
It describes the Alaafin as a unifying figure and custodian of the Yoruba people’s cultural, customary, and traditional heritage. The plaintiffs also emphasize that the Alaafin is the paramount ruler and holds the authority to appoint all chieftaincies in Oyo Town, as well as Oyo North and South.
According to the writ, the Alaafin may respond either in person or through legal counsel by submitting the necessary forms to the High Court registry, either directly or via registered mail.
