The Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, has apprehended a 26-year-old suspect allegedly responsible for the production and distribution of adulterated engine oil across Nigeria.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Gbenga Afolayan, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Lagos.
According to him, the case followed a written petition submitted to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the command, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, alleging the illegal adulteration of a popular engine oil product.
“The matter was promptly referred to the Zonal Anti-Piracy Unit for discreet investigation,” Afolayan stated.
He explained that detectives from the unit apprehended the suspect, who allegedly confessed to masterminding the production and importation of adulterated engine oil products from China before distributing them across several states.
“During intelligence-led raids, officers recovered 280 gallons of adulterated engine oils from locations in Imo, Enugu, Kano, Lagos and Ogun states,” he said.
Afolayan added that the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) confirmed that the seized products failed to meet Nigerian Industrial Standards, thereby corroborating the allegations.
The police spokesperson said Mr Fayoade reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting consumers, safeguarding legitimate businesses and ensuring that perpetrators of economic crimes are brought to justice.
