LAGOS GOVT SEALS PUBLIC TOILET FOR DUMPING RAW SEWAGE INTO DRAIN

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has sealed a public toilet facility on Savage Street, Ebute Metta, for allegedly discharging raw sewage into a public drainage system.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post shared on X on Thursday, stating that the enforcement action was carried out on Wednesday.
According to Wahab, the facility was shut down following “the deliberate pumping of raw sewage into the public drain resulting into offensive odour and sewage flow within the community.”
He described the act as a public nuisance and a clear case of environmental pollution, warning that it poses significant risks to human health and safety.
The commissioner urged residents and facility operators to adopt proper wastewater management and hygiene practices in support of public health and environmental sustainability.
“Any act of environmental nuisance or pollution will attract appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution,” Wahab warned.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has indicated that the suspended monthly environmental sanitation exercise may resume on or before March.
Wahab made this known during an inspection tour of Lagos Island on Sunday, saying consultations and stakeholder engagements were ongoing.
The sanitation exercise, previously observed on the last Saturday of every month between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., was suspended in November 2016 due to the logistical challenges of restricting movement in a megacity like Lagos.
However, worsening waste management issues, including clogged drainage systems and indiscriminate refuse dumping, have renewed calls for its reinstatement as part of broader efforts to improve environmental compliance and urban hygiene across the state.
