The Yobe State Government has lifted the midnight curfew earlier imposed across the state to enable residents observe the Ramadan fast without restrictions.
The decision was announced on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Dahiru Abdulsalam, a retired brigadier-general, following a State Security Council meeting presided over by the Deputy Governor, Idi Barde Gubana.
Abdulsalam said the council reviewed the security situation statewide and resolved that relaxing the curfew had become necessary to allow Muslim faithful to carry out religious obligations peacefully during the holy month.
“The council reviewed the security situation across the state and resolved that the relaxation of the midnight curfew has become necessary to enable the Muslim faithful to observe Ramadan peacefully and without restrictions,” he stated.
He noted that Ramadan is characterised by late-night religious activities, including preaching, seminars, congregational prayers, iftar and Qiyamul Lail, many of which extend into the early hours.
“The meeting was convened to critically assess and analyse the security situation in the state and to ensure that citizens observe the 30 days of Ramadan in peace, with their lives and property properly safeguarded,” Abdulsalam added.
However, he cautioned that criminal elements could attempt to exploit the festive atmosphere to perpetrate crimes.
“During festive and religious periods, certain individuals may try to disguise themselves to commit crimes. Security agencies have been directed to strengthen preventive measures throughout Ramadan,” he warned.
The security adviser urged residents to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with credible intelligence to sustain peace and stability across the state.
He also raised concerns over illegal mining activities in the Gulani axis of Gulani Local Government Area, noting that security operatives were taking steps to address the situation.
