The Ogun State 35 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, based in Alamala, Abeokuta, announced on Tuesday that it has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of labourer Oluwaseyi Adeoye. Adeoye was reportedly shot dead on Monday by a soldier during a demolition exercise at Ganic Company in Orile-Imo along the Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu Expressway.
In a statement, Major Idereghi Akari, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the brigade, confirmed that a board of inquiry has been established to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident. The brigade pledged transparency and accountability, promising that the findings would be made public as soon as possible.
The statement partly read: “The Headquarters of 35 Artillery Brigade has taken cognizance of allegations surrounding an incident at a demolition site at Ganic Company, Orile-Imo, Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway, Ogun State, on 23 February 2026, involving a soldier and a labourer, reportedly resulting in a fatality. The Brigade acknowledges the gravity of the situation and extends its sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased. Consequently, a board of inquiry has been promptly constituted to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation. We appeal to the public and media to remain calm as updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.”
Adeoye, who worked with the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, was part of a team enforcing building regulations at the company. The State Town Planning enforcement team had visited the site to ensure compliance with regulations on fence heights when tensions escalated between labourers and stationed military personnel.
According to eyewitnesses, resistance from soldiers led to a clash, during which a soldier allegedly opened fire. Adeoye was struck and died on the spot. His body has been taken to the State General Hospital morgue in Ijaye, Abeokuta.
Kolawole Obadeyi, Chairman of the Concrete Dealers Association, expressed shock over the incident, noting that such confrontations had been managed safely for decades. He called for government compensation for Adeoye’s family, emphasizing that the deceased was simply working to earn a living.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the shooting and stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tunji Odulami, described the killing as unfortunate and confirmed that security agencies have been contacted to identify those involved. He assured that measures would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
