Alexander Ikwechegh, the representative for Aba North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

In an undated handwritten letter obtained on Sunday, addressed to the Ward Chairman of APGA, Ikwechegh stated that his resignation takes effect immediately.

“I respectfully submit my resignation from my membership of the party, APGA, effective immediately,” he wrote.

The letter, penned on his official House of Representatives letterhead, expressed appreciation for the platform and opportunities provided by the party during his tenure.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve and contribute during my time with the party. I wish APGA continued progress and success in its future endeavours,” the letter partly read.

While the letter did not specify the reasons for his departure or disclose the party he intends to join, the move is expected to spark political reactions in Abia State, particularly in Aba, where Ikwechegh enjoys strong grassroots support.

When asked on Sunday about his motivations and the new party he plans to join, Ikwechegh said: “You will soon find out. You will soon find out the new party I want to go to soon.”

Reacting to the development, Sunday Onukwubiri, the APGA State Chairman, said: “I have not received that signal. I wouldn’t comment on something I saw on social media. The letter has not reached me. But even so, the decision could be his; I don’t know.”

Onukwubiri emphasized that APGA remains a strong and united party that will not be weakened by the exit of any member.

“It is unfortunate that some people discard the ladder they used to climb to prominence, but I can assure you that APGA will remain stronger and more united in Abia,” he added.

Ikwechegh was elected to the House of Representatives on the APGA platform and has been actively involved in legislative and constituency matters since assuming office.

As of the time of filing this report, APGA has yet to issue an official statement regarding his resignation.
