The member representing Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, has officially joined the Labour Party after leaving the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Ikwechegh announced his defection on Tuesday following a private meeting with Alex Otti at the governor’s residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, saying the visit was to formally notify the governor of his decision and seek his blessings as the party’s national leader.

“I visited the governor to receive his blessings. I have now received my Labour Party membership card,” Ikwechegh stated.

The lawmaker confirmed that he resigned from APGA before joining the Labour Party and denied reports linking his move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after attending a recent Iftar with President Bola Tinubu. He clarified that his attendance at the event should not be interpreted as a defection.

“There have been speculations that after meeting the President, I joined the APC. This is not true. We were there to observe the Iftar, and I appreciate him for the gesture,” he explained, adding that politics is driven by individual interests and perspectives.

Ikwechegh said his decision to join the Labour Party was inspired by Governor Otti’s performance, describing him as a results-oriented leader. He noted that his political ideology aligns with the governor’s vision and that the visible development in the state influenced his choice.

He also praised the Labour Party’s leadership under Senators Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha, emphasizing that the party offers a suitable platform for progressive-minded Nigerians. Ikwechegh encouraged residents to register with the Labour Party, promising that an online registration link would soon be available.

Ginger Onwusibe, member representing Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency and Leader of the Labour Party caucus in the National Assembly, welcomed Ikwechegh to the party. Onwusibe noted that Ikwechegh resigned from APGA last week and was formally received by the Labour Party caucus in Abuja before his presentation to Governor Otti.

“This is a significant gain for our party and will positively impact the 2027 general election,” Onwusibe said, likening the defection to a football club signing a talented player. He expressed confidence that Ikwechegh would make meaningful contributions under the Labour Party platform, citing the achievements of other LP lawmakers from Abia State, including Amobi Ogah.

“We are thrilled to have him in our family. He saw the good works of the governor and the contributions of our Abia Labour Party members. Very soon, he will also make his own impact,” Onwusibe added.
