An articulated truck has killed three people, including a toddler and two adults, at the Toll-Gate section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
The Media reported on Friday that the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the accident occurred around 2 pm.
Akinbiyi stated that six other people sustained varying degrees of injuries in the incident, which involved a total of 15 individuals.
He explained that eyewitnesses reported the articulated truck suffered brake failure before crashing into multiple vehicles and passengers who were waiting to board a bus at the bus stop.
He said, “A fatal road traffic accident occurred at the Toll-Gate along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. The crash involved a white Howo Sino truck with number plate T4995LA, two yellow commercial buses with plates SMK 199YK and AGL394YA, an LT commercial bus with plate FKJ 360YH, and two yellow Suzuki buses with plates 98YL and KSF 23YA.
“Eyewitnesses reported that the Howo truck suffered brake failure, crushing victims who were trying to board a bus and damaging several vehicles along the way.”
Akinbiyi added that three people were killed in the crash, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
“Fifteen people were involved in the incident; six commuters were injured, while three others—a toddler and two adults—died,” he added.
The TRACE spokesperson, while expressing condolences to the families of the deceased, warned owners of articulated vehicles to ensure their trucks are properly maintained before embarking on trips.
“Articulated vehicle drivers are once again urged to carry out regular maintenance of their vehicles, given the risks involved.
“Additionally, traders who display their wares on walkways and roadsides are advised to remove them to avoid potential consequences,” Akinbiyi said.
Barely two weeks ago, six people were killed in a similar accident at the same toll gate. The Media reported that a truck transporting oil lost its brakes and crushed the victims.
Following that incident, Ogun State Government officials visited the scene and ordered the removal of traders operating at the bus stop.
