FG APPROVES EMPLOYMENT OF 50 DOCTORS, 100 NURSES FOR CORRECTIONAL CENTRES

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the employment of 50 medical doctors and 100 nurses to serve in hospitals across the nation’s correctional centres.
Tunji-Ojo made this known on Tuesday in Abuja when the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, paid him a courtesy visit.
According to the minister, the approval was necessitated by the shortage of medical personnel in several correctional facilities across the country. He noted that some facilities lacked doctors entirely.
He cited the correctional centre in Rivers State as an example, stating that the facility had no medical doctor attending to inmates despite having medical infrastructure in place.
Tunji-Ojo also revealed that some correctional facilities, including the one in Kuje, possess equipment capable of performing major surgical procedures.
“The President understands that he is the President of all Nigerians, including those inmates. And as a father to all, he has always shown that he cares,” the minister said.
He further explained that the Federal Government had initiated capacity-building programmes for inmates, particularly through a train-the-trainer model designed to enable skilled inmates train others.
“We conducted inmate skills audits across correctional centres to identify the skills inmates possess. Those with relevant skills are empowered to train others, and those who complete the training are supported,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo also noted that the Federal Government had improved the welfare of inmates, adding that the president approved a 50 per cent increase in feeding allowances for inmates.
The minister emphasised the need for stronger collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to ensure that the reforms and achievements of the Federal Ministry of Interior are properly communicated to Nigerians.
He also highlighted efforts by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to secure the nation’s mining sector through the creation of Mine Marshals in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development.
According to him, the initiative has contributed to a reduction in criminal activities and violence in mining areas, while also improving the protection of critical national assets.
