POLICE APPREHEND SEVEN SUSPECTS FOR ILLEGAL MINING AND VANDALISM OF GOVERNMENT PROPERTY IN NIGER STATE

The Niger State Police Command has detained seven individuals for engaging in illegal mining and vandalizing government property in Gurara Local Government Area.

According to a statement released on Wednesday in Minna by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the arrests were made as part of the command’s ongoing efforts to protect and preserve public property in the state.

He explained that on March 22, around 5:00 pm, following reports of illegal mining and vandalism at Gurara Waterfalls, police officers from Gawu-Babangida Division conducted a sting operation at the site, resulting in the arrest of seven suspects.

Abiodun noted that the suspects, aged between 27 and 40, are residents of Tsauni area in Gwagwalada, Abuja, and Lambata in Niger State.

Recovered items included two water pump engines, 14 carpets, six shovels, three diggers, two pipes, and seven head pans.

The Public Relations Officer added that the case has been handed over to the SCID in Minna for further investigation.

He further disclosed that on March 17, at around 4:00 pm, a similar operation was conducted at the same location, leading to the arrest of eight suspects and the recovery of thirteen shovels, six diggers, and other items.

The police spokesperson emphasized that efforts to combat illegal mining and vandalism will continue.
