Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has expressed support for the use of consensus in selecting candidates ahead of the 2027 general election, stating that the approach helps produce electable candidates rather than unpopular ones.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily on Thursday, she dismissed concerns that consensus could override the preferences of party members, maintaining that political parties naturally consider popularity in their decision-making.

“I believe consensus can produce the right candidates because it does not mean the leadership ignores the will of the people; rather, it reflects what the people want. No party wants to lose, so it will not pick candidates that could lead to defeat,” she said.

She added that political parties are ultimately driven by the goal of winning elections and are unlikely to present candidates who lack grassroots appeal.

“So, consensus will naturally favour candidates who can win on the ground, because ultimately the party’s goal is victory. No party would choose an unpopular candidate as a consensus option in a way that alienates others or discourages credible contenders. I strongly believe consensus is the right approach,” she added.

The former Ogun Central senator expressed confidence that the system would work in her favour as she seeks the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State.

Iyabo Obasanjo, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC ahead of the 2027 elections, said her record in public service gives her an advantage in the race.

She also reaffirmed confidence in her political strength, recalling earlier remarks that she remains a strong contender in the Ogun governorship race.

In a previous appearance on The Morning Brief, the 59-year-old politician expressed optimism about receiving support from her parents, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

“I don’t think at this stage of my life I need to consult them on every career decision. What I have said is that my father—and my mother—will vote for me; that is all I can ask. Even without asking, I am confident they will support me,” she said.

The Electoral Act recognises both consensus and direct primaries as methods for selecting candidates within political parties, a framework that continues to influence party strategies ahead of the next general election.

The Media reports that the All Progressives Congress has confirmed it will adopt the consensus approach in selecting its national leadership at its convention scheduled for March 27–28, 2026, in Abuja.
