The report of the Independent Panel investigating the Nigeria Correctional Service has underscored key reforms required to enhance the nation’s correctional system, placing particular emphasis on digitisation and staff welfare.
These issues were central to discussions on Good Morning Nigeria, a flagship programme on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), where members of the panel featured as guests.
A panel member, Dr. Ikechukwu Ezeugo, highlighted the urgent need to digitise inmate records across correctional facilities nationwide, describing it as a crucial step toward modernising the system.
“The adoption of digital record-keeping will significantly enhance efficiency, improve data management, and strengthen transparency within our correctional facilities,” he said.
Ezeugo noted that the current manual processes contribute to delays, data inconsistencies, and limited accountability, challenges he said could be addressed through a centralised digital system.
Also speaking, the chairman of the panel, Dr. Magdalene Ajana, called for immediate improvements in the welfare and working conditions of correctional personnel.
“Addressing the welfare concerns of correctional officers is not just about staff well-being; it is fundamental to boosting morale and enhancing service delivery across facilities,” she stated.
Ajana stressed that enhanced remuneration, improved working conditions, and access to sufficient resources would enable personnel to carry out their responsibilities more efficiently.
The panel’s findings, as highlighted during the programme, point to a dual reform strategy—harnessing technology to boost operational efficiency while strengthening human capital to deliver a more responsive and effective correctional system.
