Operatives of the Anambra State security outfit, Agunechemba, have demolished a brothel in the Okpuno area of Awka, arresting 38 individuals allegedly involved in prostitution and drug trafficking. Those apprehended include 20 female sex workers and 18 men.
Among those arrested were the facility’s manager, a supervisor, a bar attendant, and a storekeeper. Authorities described the location as a major criminal hub linked to illicit drug sales and sexual exploitation.

Items recovered during the raid included Tramadol, cannabis, nitrous oxide, Rohypnol, and a locally fabricated single-barrel gun.
The manager, Paul Chibuike, admitted that drugs were sold at the premises but denied ownership of the firearm. He also claimed that some of the women were students who frequented the brothel on weekends to support themselves financially. Chibuike said he was running the establishment on behalf of an employer who also owns another drug outlet on Abakaliki Street, a well-known red-light district in Awka.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, confirmed that the property would be seized under the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025 due to the findings from the operation.
Following the raid, the state government demolished the one-storey building that housed the brothel.
