A former Minister of Information and ex-Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Labaran Maku, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), pledging to mobilise support for the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
Maku announced his defection on Tuesday while addressing journalists alongside party officials at his residence in Wakama, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area.
He said his decision to join the SDP was driven by a desire to contribute to the party’s growth and strengthen its presence both in Nasarawa State and nationwide.
“I have joined the SDP in order to contribute my quota to the success of the party. I will develop the party by God’s grace,” he said.
The former minister assured party members of his commitment to working for the victory of SDP candidates before, during, and after the 2027 elections. He also noted that his choice of the party was partly to honour the legacies of the late MKO Abiola and Godiya Akwashiki, whom he described as impactful leaders.
Maku further hinted at a possible bid for the vacant Nasarawa North senatorial seat following the demise of Akwashiki, stating that he would respond to calls from stakeholders if given the opportunity and subject to approval by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He criticised the imposition of candidates by political leaders, urging governors to uphold democratic principles and prioritise good governance. He also called on residents of the state to remain united and peaceful.
In his resignation letter addressed to his ward chairman in Wakama, Maku cited the lingering crisis within the PDP and the collective decision of his supporters to pursue a new political direction as reasons for his exit.
Meanwhile, the SDP Zonal Chairman in Nasarawa North Senatorial District, Mohammed Audu, welcomed Maku into the party and assured him of equal rights and opportunities.
The development is expected to reshape political alignments in Nasarawa State as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
