Unknown gunmen have shot and killed HRH Jesophat Ikegwu, the traditional ruler of Ishinkwor community in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The attack took place on Wednesday night inside the monarch’s palace.

Community sources told the media that the assailants stormed the palace and shot Ikegwu through a window.

Onicha Local Government Chairman, Ikechukwu Ogbofia, confirmed the killing, condemning the act and stating that police are investigating the incident. He also urged residents to remain calm.

The Police Public Relations Officer of Ebonyi State Command, SP Joshua Ukandu, corroborated the report.

Ikegwu’s death marks the fifth traditional ruler killed in Ebonyi State this year.

Last month, the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike community in Ikwo Local Government Area was abducted and killed, with his body set on fire. Nine suspects were arrested in connection to that crime, but no further updates have been provided.
