The Ogun State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu Ode following a suspected gas leak that left about 30 students hospitalized.

The incident reportedly occurred shortly after the school assembly on Wednesday, sparking panic as a gaseous substance spread across the campus. Several students and staff reportedly experienced difficulty breathing.

In a statement on Thursday, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said Governor Dapo Abiodun had directed security agencies to investigate the cause of the incident, emphasizing that the findings would inform measures to prevent a recurrence.

Governor Dapo Abiodun also ordered the immediate closure of the affected school.

“Governor Abiodun has directed the swift activation of a Situation Room at the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, to provide free medical treatment to students and residents from the impacted areas, including Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto, and Oke-Aje market,” the statement said.

Residents of Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto, and Oke-Aje were urged to remain calm, with the government assuring that no confirmed security threat has been linked to the incident.

Ola Oresanya said officials from the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency deployed gas analysers to identify the source and composition of the substance.

The statement added that Oresanya, together with other government representatives, visited both the school and the hospital where the affected students were receiving care.

The commissioner noted that most of the students and staff affected were in stable condition.

The Media gathered that while some insiders initially speculated the incident might have been caused by a nearby gas explosion, others suggested it originated from a chemical odor in the school laboratory during a practical session.

Adeola Borogun, the school’s Vice Principal (Junior School), dismissed claims of an explosion, describing the incident as the presence of an unusual chemical smell within the school premises.
