ADC MEMBERSHIP SURGES AFTER INEC DELISTS MARK, AREGBESOLA

The African Democratic Congress has reported a sharp increase in membership following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s decision to delist Senator David Mark and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as the party’s national chairman and national secretary.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed in a statement shared on his X account on Sunday that membership figures had risen significantly, from over 40,000 registrations on April 2 to more than 500,000 new members joining within days.
INEC, through its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, announced the delisting on April 1, citing a court directive instructing the commission to maintain the status quo pending the resolution of a suit challenging the legality of Mark’s leadership.
The commission subsequently removed Mark and Aregbesola from its official portal and stated that it would not recognise Nafiu Bala Gombe, who had approached the court seeking to be declared national chairman.
Haruna noted that INEC had received conflicting legal submissions from rival factions, including a cautionary letter advising against recognising Gombe and another urging compliance with a Court of Appeal judgment affirming his position.
Reacting to the development, Abdullahi, alongside his Peoples Democratic Party counterpart, Ini Ememobong, described the situation as a “calculated attempt to undermine democratic structures,” and called on supporters to mobilise in defence of democratic principles.
