ELECTROCUTION TRAGEDY ON KATCHA HIGHWAY CLAIMS FIVE LIVES, THREE INJURED

A fatal electrocution incident along the Kupafu–Essa village stretch of the Katcha highway in Niger State has claimed the lives of five persons and left three others seriously injured.
The accident occurred on April 20, 2026, at about 9:00 a.m.
It was gathered that the incident happened when a trailer transporting cartons of milk and passengers from Lagos to Kano ran into a traffic obstruction along the highway.
It was gathered in an attempt to bypass the hold-up, the driver diverted the vehicle into a nearby bush path.
During the diversion, the passengers and the loaded trailer reportedly came into contact with high-voltage power cables, resulting in the electrocution of five persons on the spot, while three others sustained varying degrees of serious injuries.
Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command said the three injured victims were immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, for medical attention.
He disclosed that the remains of the five deceased were evacuated to the General Hospital, Badeggi, Katcha.
The Command added that the driver of the trailer is currently at large, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend him for investigation.
