Britain’s King Charles III has called on the United States to remain firmly aligned with its Western allies, warning that global tensions over Iran and Ukraine are placing unprecedented strain on transatlantic relations.
In a rare address to the US Congress on Tuesday, the monarch said the partnership between the United States and the United Kingdom remains strong despite occasional disagreements, describing it as one “born out of dispute, but no less strong for it.”
“The challenges we face are too great for any one nation to bear alone,” King Charles said, stressing the need for closer cooperation between the US and its traditional allies in addressing global security threats.
The speech came during celebrations marking 250 years since American independence and is the first address by a British monarch to Congress since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.
King Charles emphasised the importance of supporting Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia, calling for “unyielding resolve” to secure a “just and lasting peace.” He also highlighted NATO’s role in maintaining global stability and referenced shared democratic values between both nations.
He noted that historical legal principles, including Magna Carta, had influenced US constitutional jurisprudence, drawing applause from lawmakers.
“Our defence, intelligence and security ties are hardwired together,” he added, underscoring deep military and economic cooperation between both countries.
The visit follows a warm reception at the White House by US President Donald Trump, who praised the UK as America’s “closest ally” and reaffirmed the strength of the “special relationship” during a ceremonial South Lawn welcome featuring a 21-gun salute and military flyover.

Despite recent diplomatic tensions over Iran and other policy issues, both leaders struck a conciliatory tone during the visit.
The royal visit will conclude with a state dinner later on Tuesday, marking a blend of ceremonial pageantry and high-level diplomacy amid ongoing global geopolitical tensions.
