CD Portosantense forward Stanley Kanu believes he can bring goals to
Nigeria’s U20 team if he receives a call-up from coach Paul Aigbogun
for the African Youth Championship qualifiers.
The Flying Eagles struggled for goals as they sealed a place in the
round 3 of the African Youth Championship qualifiers courtesy of a 1-0
win over Guinea Bissau at the UJ Esuene Stadium a forthnight ago.
Young forward Adamu Alhassan grabbed the only goal from the penalty
spot for Nigeria to win 3-2 on aggregate after playing 2-2 in the
first-leg.
Former Diamond Football Academy striker Kanu has hit the ground
running since his move to the Portuguese third division side
Portosantense in the January transfer window, scoring eight goals in
the league and has vowed to bring his form to the Flying Eagles team
if given the opportunity.
Speaking of his successful debut season in Portugal, the 19-year-old
who is hoping for a call up to Nigeria’s U20 team said his ability to
constantly make runs behind the defenders is one of his strengths.
“It’s the movement that’s important, if you run well, you get the
ball, sometimes you make a hundred runs without the ball and you score
with the next ball, you always have to keep pushing. I think that is
one quality I have,” Kanu began.
“I’ll be delighted if I get a call-up to the Flying Eagles. It’ll be a
great honour to represent Nigeria.
“If the coach gives me the opportunity I’m confident I’ll help the
team with my goals,” ‘Jamba’ as the striker is fondly called
concluded.
