Though no team from Africa might have won the FIFA world cup, there are many teams which are exceedingly talented and popular. They have caught the imagination of football fans around the world by their sheer skill, footwork and other attributes. Hence, it would be interesting to have a closer look at the top 20 football team of Africa in terms of world FIFA ranking.

Nigeria

Nigeria is ranked 9th in the African list which is a bit surprising because they are a talented team. They are ranked 48th in the world ranking and they have quite a few upsets to their name in the world cup.
Nigeria won the cup in 1980 and was runners up in 2013. They have some fantastic names like Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Moses.

Senegal

Senegal is a small country in Western Africa and is the top-ranked African team according to FIFA. They have 884 points as per FIFA ranking.
There are some big stars and the names of Sadio Mane and Kelta Balde always comes to our mind. They won the Amilcar Cabral Cup last in 2001 and were runners-up in 2005.

The team has many talented players such as Mohamed Saleh with 58 caps and he plays for Liverpool. They have a good record in the African cup of Nations record with a win in 2010. They have 805 points.

With 740 Points Congo DR are ranked fourth in Africa while being 38th in the overall world FIFA ranking.
It does have some promising and entertaining players like Cedric Bekambu and Benik Afobe amongst others. However, their record in the African cup of Nations has been lukewarm and they last won the cup in 1974.

Morocco

Morocco is often considered the dark horse in world cup football. As of now they have 738 points and are fifth in the list of African nations while being 41st in world ranks.
There are quite a few talented players but Achraf Hakimi who plays for Real Madrid is the one to watch out for. They were the runners-up in 2004 in the African Cup of Nations.

Burkina Faso

A small country with quite a bit of football talent Burkina Faso has 705 points and stands in the 6th position in Africa, while being 52 in the list of teams across the world.
Most of the players of Burkino Faso play abroad and the captain Moumouni Dagano is widely respected and skilled. The team does not have anything significant as far as African Cup of Nations is concerned.

Cameroon

This is a tiny nation and it has had its moments of glory as far as world football is concerned. They have 696 points are ranked 49th in the world.
Though they do not have anything extraordinary to show in the African Cup Of Nations record they have produced some fascinating players including the mercurial Roger Milla.
 

Algeria

Algeria with 588 points is the 10th team in Africa and they are overall 66th in world rankings. They have qualified for 2018 world cup and historically they have done well on the African circuit.
Historically Madjer is considered to be one of the best players for this country. They ended fourth in 2010 and won the championship way back in 1990.

A small country, Cote dā€™Ivoire is a football-loving nations. They have performed quite well in the African circuit though asfar as international ranking is concerned they are 68th.
They have produced some fascinating players. Didier Drogba is a legend playing since 2002. He has 99 caps and 63 goals to his credit.
 

Guinea

Guinea shares the 68th position with Ivory Coast and though they have won any major champion events, they are talented as a team. They had the best success in 2015 when they reached the quarter-final stage of the Africa Cup Of Nations.
It is the country which has seen the likes of Ibrahima Diallo.

Cape Verde is in the 65th place as far as world cup football is concerned. They are not one of the best teams in Africa but are building a good team.
They have never qualified for the FIFA world cup but did qualify for the 2013 African Cup Of Nations. There are some famous players like Stopira and Nilson.

Mali

They are placed 64 in the world list and they may not be considered as being the star team of Africa. But this does not mean that they have no skilled football talents.
There are some worth mentioning names like Jean Tigana and Mohammed Sissoko. Their biggest success was in 1972 when they reached the African Nations Cup Final.

South Africa

South Africa is known for its achievements in Cricket but of late they also have been able to show their prowess in football too. After being out of competitive football for long because of apartheid, South Africa came back strongly to win the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.
Their track record in FIFA is not very good. They are ranked 74th.

Zambia

Zambia is another lukewarm team of the African football circuit with 468 points. They are 76th in the world rankings. But they surprised everyone by winning the 2012 Africa Cup Of Nations championships.
Since then, their football has been on the upswing. Today they are 76th in world rankings.

Ghana

With 657 points Ghana are ranked 47th in the international ranking. They were placed second in the African Cup of Nations and were champions in 1963 and 1965. Though they did not qualify for 2018 FIFA world cup they have some big names like Abdul Nafiu Idrissu and Abedi Pele.
 

Uganda

Uganda with 448 points is 82nd in the list of world cup rankings. They also have some famous players like Denis Onyango and Godfrey Walusimbi.
Their high came in the year 1978 when they were runners up and since then they have been lukewarm in their performances. They also have the legendary Ibrahim Sekagaya as their member from the historical perspective.

Benin Republic

With 427 points Benin Republic are considered minnows as far as African football is concerned. But football is quite popular here.
They also have their share of famous footballers including Anicet Adjamossi and StĆ©phane SessĆØgnon. Their track record in Africa Cup Of Nations is also not too impressive.

They are a lowly placed team of African football and are also not very strongly present in the international ranking. However, they did surprise a few by some stunning wins over some famous opponents.
They are famous for some reasonably big names like Edson Ricardo Nunes Correia Silva and Esmael Goncalves.

They have never qualified for the FIFA world cup and they have entered the group stages a few times as far as Africa Cup Of Nations is concerned. However, Libya has produced some famous footballers like Claudio Gentile and Eamen Zayed.
