OKADA BAN: POLICE, MILITARY PERSONNEL ARE PROHIBITED TO RIDE OKADA UNLESS IN UNIFORM – SANWO-OLU’S AIDE

Police and military personnel may only use motorcycles popularly called Okada on restricted Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Area roads while they are in uniform, according to Hon. Sola Giwa, special adviser to the governor on transportation.

Additionally, he said that private motorcycles with engines larger than 220 cc are not allowed on these roads for safety reasons.

Giwa made this statement while discussing the extension of the Okada ban by Lagos State government to four more LGAs and six LCDAs on Friday Morning show, “Your View,” on TVC News.

When questioned about whether police and military people are exempted from the restriction, Giwa responded, “Police officers and military personnel are only permitted to use okadas when they are dressed in their official uniforms. Also, he must ensure that he is wearing all required safety equipment.”

The ban, he made clear, is in place to address a number of state-wide issues, including security, health, and safety concerns.

He claims that, no matter how small, all roads in any specified LCDAsĀ or LGAsĀ are expected to adhere to the Okada ban.

The Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed full enforcement of the ban on the additional areas on September 1, 2022.

The additional councils where the total Okada ban is pronounced include Kosofe Local Government, Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, Shomolu Local Government, and Mushin Local Government.

Others are Ikosi-Isherri LCDA, Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Isolo LCDA, Bariga LCDA, and Odi-Olowo LCDA.

In May, the operation of Okadas on highways and six local governments and nine LCDAs. They include Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Apapa. The ban followed the February 2020 restriction placed on the activities of Okadas.
