Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has called for the arrest and prosecution of individuals behind recent incidents of political violence in the state, insisting that the cycle of attacks and killings must be brought to an end.

The governor also renewed his demand for the redeployment of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, accusing him of failing to act impartially in addressing security challenges linked to political activities.

A statement issued by Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said the governor made the remarks while receiving the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the ICT Department at Force Headquarters, Abuja, Adegoke Fayoade, at the Government House in Osogbo.

Also present during the visit were the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone XI, Osogbo, Akinyele Fasuba, and the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan.

Addressing the delegation, Adeleke expressed concern over what he described as the negligence and partisan conduct of some police officers, which he said had contributed to the escalation of political violence in the state.

According to the governor, some security personnel were allegedly collaborating with political thugs, while several recent killings linked to political tensions remain unresolved.

He cited the murders of individuals identified as Eluyera in Ikire, Ezekiel in Ilobu and Aderogba in Esa Oke, lamenting that no arrests had been made despite the incidents.

Adeleke further alleged that armed political thugs had recently attacked residents, vandalised billboards belonging to the Accord Party and carried out shootings in parts of the state without facing arrest.

“Violence must stop, and those responsible must be identified, arrested and prosecuted. We have witnessed a series of attacks and killings without any meaningful law enforcement response,” the governor said.

He noted that while members of the Accord Party were allegedly being arrested for minor offences, suspects linked to serious crimes, including murder and armed attacks, had not been brought to justice.

The governor said he expected concrete results from the intervention of the police hierarchy and reiterated his lack of confidence in the state police commissioner’s handling of security matters.

Responding, DIG Fayoade said the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, had directed the police leadership in Osun to ensure that acts of violence, murder and other criminal activities were not tolerated.

He stated that all reported cases of violence would be thoroughly investigated and that anyone found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Fayoade also assured the governor that adequate security measures would be put in place to guarantee peaceful elections in the state, noting that recent elections in Anambra and Ekiti states were conducted without major security incidents.

“The police will live up to expectations. The Commissioner of Police and all officers under his command will perform their duties in line with the Constitution and the rule of law. We will not allow anyone to undermine peace and security in Osun State,” he said.
