Aliyu Bin Abbas, a former aide to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) for the 2027 general election.

Abbas, who is also the founder of the National Youth Alliance, secured the party’s ticket during the ADP National Convention held in Abuja in the early hours of Saturday.

His emergence comes amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 polls, as opposition parties and emerging movements position themselves around issues such as economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and governance challenges.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Okpani Dickson, said the results were announced around 5:30 a.m., sparking celebrations among delegates and supporters at the convention.

Dickson also clarified that Abbas’ presidential bid is independent and not linked to any political bloc or former affiliation.

He said although Abbas previously worked closely with Atiku Abubakar—who is also expected to contest the 2027 presidential election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—their association ended over two years ago following a political divergence.

According to him, “Aliyu Bin Abbas enters this race on his own merit and under a completely independent platform. His previous role as an aide to Atiku Abubakar ended over two years ago, and both have since gone their separate ways.”

He added that Abbas’ candidacy represents a break from established political structures and is driven by the desire for fresh leadership rooted in youth inclusion.

Speaking after clinching the ticket, Abbas described his emergence as the start of a broader movement focused on national renewal, inclusive governance, and youth empowerment.

He said the development marks a turning point for Nigeria, calling for unity across all divides in pursuit of progress and development.

Abbas further stated that his campaign would prioritise national cohesion and economic transformation, insisting that a “new Nigeria” is possible through collective effort.

Earlier, ADP National Chairman Yabagi Yusuf Sani said the convention reflected the party’s commitment to offering a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political space.

He praised party members for their loyalty and resilience, stressing the need for internal democracy, transparency, and service-oriented leadership within political parties.

Sani added that Nigeria requires a new political culture built on inclusion, competence, and unity, noting that the ADP remains committed to democratic principles and national development.
