BREAKING: RONALDO’S WORLD CUP JOURNEY ENDS IN HEARTBREAK AFTER SPAIN DEFEAT

By: Fasasi Hammad
Portugal’s FIFA World Cup campaign came to a painful end on Monday night after a late goal from Mikel Merino secured a 1-0 victory for the Spain national football team over the Portugal national football team in their Round of 16 encounter at Dallas Stadium.
The result marked a disappointing exit for Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, whose appearance had been widely viewed as potentially his final World Cup match.
Ronaldo spearheaded Portugal’s attack alongside João Félix and Bruno Fernandes, creating moments of danger and testing Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón during the opening half. However, Spain’s well-organised defence, marshalled by Rodri, successfully limited Portugal’s attacking opportunities for much of the contest.

The match remained evenly balanced throughout, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances.
Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa delivered several crucial saves to keep his team in contention, including an impressive double stop against Spain’s youthful attackers. Despite Ronaldo’s persistent efforts to unlock the Spanish defence, meaningful openings proved difficult to find.
Portugal suffered a setback midway through the second half when Nuno Mendes was forced off with a hamstring injury, disrupting the team’s rhythm and allowing Spain to gain greater control as the game progressed.
The breakthrough finally came in the opening minute of stoppage time. Spain capitalised on a quickly taken free-kick, with Ferran Torres slipping a pass into the penalty area for Merino, who calmly slotted the ball past Costa to secure the winner.
The late strike sparked jubilant celebrations among Spanish fans and heartbreak for Portugal, whose hopes of progressing were dashed at the death.
While Portugal bow out after a determined tournament run that included a dramatic Round of 32 victory over Croatia, Spain advance to the quarter-finals with confidence growing and their strong defensive record intact as they continue their pursuit of major silverware.
